Plant Spacing Calculator

Calculate how many plants fit in a bed and optimal spacing from bed dimensions and plant spacing requirements.

Proper spacing prevents disease, reduces competition for nutrients, and maximizes yield. Triangular (offset) layout fits about 15% more plants than a square grid in the same area.

  • Spacing requirements are usually listed on seed packets or plant labels
  • Dense planting suppresses weeds but increases humidity — good for some plants, bad for others
  • Tall plants should be placed at the north end of the bed to avoid shading shorter plants
  • Add 15–20 cm border around the bed edge for the outer plants
